Music – Ensemble Playing, Concerts & Creative Development

Music at Højskolen Mors is a subject for those who want to play music together with others and develop their musical skills. The core of the course is ensemble playing, where you will have the opportunity to work with your primary instrument and experiment with other instruments in a band setting. At the same time, you will be introduced to key musical concepts such as groove, sound, and musical interaction.

In the course, we connect music theory and music history to the songs, genres, and artists we work with. This gives you a comprehensive understanding of music—both in practice and in theory. In this way, we explore music from every angle in the rehearsal room. The teaching is tailored to your level, ensuring that you are challenged appropriately and have the opportunity to develop your musical abilities.

Concerts

An important part of the course is working towards live performances. During your stay, you will take part in concerts and events at the folk high school, including café evenings and the På Toppen Festival. You will gain experience with both the technical aspects of concert production and the performance side of being on stage. You will learn what it takes to create a concert as a complete and cohesive musical experience.

Interpretation (covers) and original material

In addition, we work with interpreting existing music and developing original material. You will have the opportunity to put your personal stamp on the music and experiment with songwriting and composition—both individually and in collaboration with others.

WHAT TO EXPECT IN MUSIC

  • Many concerts - We rehearse regularly leading up to concerts and perform for an audience. You will learn to perform both as a soloist and as part of a band.
  • You help choose the music – You have a big say in what we play – we choose the repertoire together.
  • Many different genres – We play everything from rock, pop, funk, and soul to folk, jazz, and electronic – maybe even your favorite genres!
  • Recording in the school’s studio – You'll have the opportunity to try your hand at recording and learn basic studio techniques.
  • Interpretation and original material – We always work on giving the music our own touch – we don’t just copy, we create something new. There's also room for writing your own music and setting up concerts in creative ways.

Teacher in music

Gry holds a Master’s degree in Musicology from Aarhus University, with a focus on both band leadership and music anthropology. Since early childhood, she has been deeply curious about the world of music – both the music we create together and the ways music shapes us, influences us, and builds communities.

She grew up within the Danish free school tradition and knows the Folk High School Songbook inside out. She believes that morning assembly and communal singing are among the very best ways to begin the day.

At Højskolen Mors, Gry also teaches choir, vocal training, kucheza, party band, and music theory.
