Botany for Beginners

Botany for Beginners at Højskolen Mors

Learn to recognize plants – from root to flower

Have you ever walked in nature and wondered which plants you encounter—and how they actually work?

In Botany for Beginners at Højskolen Mors, you will receive a basic introduction to plants, nature, and ecology. The subject is for anyone curious about nature—whether you have experience or are starting from scratch.

What do you learn in Botany for Beginners?

The teaching is based on the natural surroundings of the school, where we work with the plants we find just outside the door. You will learn to identify common Danish plants and gain an understanding of their structure, function, and role in nature.

We explore how plants grow, reproduce, and transport water, and how they interact with fungi and insects. At the same time, we look at the history of plants and their importance to humans—as food, medicine, and materials.

You will gain practical tools to:

  • Recognize 30–40 common plants in Denmark.
  • Understand plant growth, reproduction, and interaction with their environment.
  • Gain insight into the historical significance of plants.
  • Gain hands-on experience working in nature.

Botany for Beginners is for those who want to better understand nature, are considering a future in green fields, or simply want to learn to recognize plants in everyday life.

Teaching in Nature

Botany lessons alternate between field trips in nature, simple experiments, and group discussions. We actively use the local surroundings and work at a calm pace with room for reflection and immersion. The teaching is shaped by the values of the folk high school: community, presence, and curiosity.

Once you learn to recognize plants, your perception of nature changes. What was once a green background becomes living organisms with names, functions, and stories.

“I didn’t think I could tell beech from oak. Now I greet them like old friends.” – Former student

Combine with Nature in Us and Permaculture

Botany for Beginners can be combined with subjects such as The Nature In Us and Permaculture. This allows you to place your knowledge of plants in a broader context where nature, humans, and sustainability are closely connected.

You work both with the body’s relationship to nature and with how plants are part of cultivation systems that take environment and resources into account. The combination gives you a holistic understanding, where you not only learn about plants—but also about how we live with and from nature in a more conscious way.

Oso Souki Bracho

Oso Souki Bracho

Teacher in Botany for Beginners

Since Oso attended his first Permaculture course over 20 years ago, his heart has been dedicated to ecology, green energy, self-sufficiency, and local produce.
Oso lived in Copenhagen for several years but realized that from his small apartment, he couldn’t do enough for the climate – sorting waste simply wasn’t enough! So, Oso and his family moved to Mors, where they started their own organic, sustainable farm based on permaculture principles. Oso is therefore an expert at teaching permaculture in a practical, hands-on way, helping others create sustainable systems from the ground up.

Oso is passionate about motivating the high school's students to live more sustainably and to create a food culture at Højskolen Mors that contributes positively to the climate, the environment and the green transition.
